GIR Tracking Questions
What counts as a green in regulation?
On par 3s: hitting the green with your tee shot. On par 4s: hitting the green in 2 shots. On par 5s: hitting the green in 3 shots. Fringe doesn't count.
What's a good GIR percentage by handicap?
Average golfers (15-20 hdcp): 3-5 GIR. Good golfers (5-10 hdcp): 7-9 GIR. Scratch golfers: 11-12 GIR. Tour players: 12-13 GIR. Know your baseline.
How much does GIR affect my score?
Each additional GIR saves about 0.5 strokes on average. Improve from 5 to 8 GIR? That's 1.5 strokes per round just from hitting more greens.
Should I track where my misses go?
Yes! Track left, right, short, or long. Patterns reveal tendencies. Consistently short? Maybe club up. Always right? Fix that in practice.
Is it better to track manually or automatically?
Either works! Manual tracking (marking yes/no per hole) takes 30 seconds per round. GPS tracking is automatic but requires marking shots.
Can I see GIR by specific course?
Yes! Filter your GIR stats by course. You might hit 8 GIR at your home course but only 5 at tougher tracks. Useful for benchmarking.
