Introduction
Welcome to The Grand Plan Version 1, your guide to getting more fun, fulfillment, and success from golf without grinding endless hours on the range. I’m Ricky Esteb, a former Division 1 golfer, plus-handicap player, and golf consultant who’s helped countless golfers unlock their potential. As a full-time dad, husband, surfer, fisherman, and adventurer, I’ve learned that golf is about freedom—more time with friends, lower scores, and confidence on every swing. This book distills decades of experience, competing at high levels, and learning from the best into a simple system: the Grand Plan.
The Grand Plan is a three-stage framework for playing smarter, not harder: Setup (Preparation), Swing (Action), and Finish (Follow-Through). It mirrors playing a great golf hole—aligning mentally, taking deliberate action, and reflecting for continuous improvement. Combined with the Three Phases of Golf Mastery (Just Starting Out, Building Consistency, Mastery and Flow), it guides you from beginner fundamentals to advanced flow.
This book addresses the traps of modern golf: endless YouTube tips, quick fixes, and overwhelming choices. Instead, we leverage your natural talents, mindset, and tools for results with less effort. You’ll find actionable drills, personal anecdotes, and previews of my app features at thegrandplan.com.au to fast-track your progress.
The Grand Plan Explained
Setup (Preparation): Assess strengths, visualize goals, and align efforts. This stage is about fundamentals like grip and mindset (Chapters 2–5).
Swing (Action): Take small, consistent actions. Focus on key clubs and consistency-building drills (Chapters 6–10).
Finish (Follow-Through): Reflect, adjust, and commit to growth. Dive into advanced fundamentals and app tools (Chapters 11–17).
The Three Phases of Golf Mastery
Just Starting Out: Get results with a repeatable swing (Chapters 2–5).
Building Consistency: Make your game predictable (Chapters 6–10).
Mastery and Flow: Hone craft and enjoy effortless play (Chapters 11–17).
The Three E’s for Personalized Goals
Energy: What energizes you in golf? (e.g., strategy, shots with friends)
Experience: What lessons shape your game? (e.g., fixing a slice)
Earnings: What success looks like? (e.g., lower handicap, more fun)
Use the Three E’s worksheet in the workbook to craft your plan.
Anecdote
Chasing a pro career, I spent months traveling, grinding, and missing family. My father’s advice—“Be better in every area”—hit home. I simplified, focusing on leverage over labor, leading to scratch golf with one monthly round. That became the Grand Plan.
Spend 10 minutes on the Three E’s worksheet:
Energy: List 3 energizing aspects.
Experience: Note 3 breakthroughs.
Earnings: Define 3 success goals.
Workshop Tie-In
The Golf Stats app at stats.thegrandplan.com.au extends this book with tools for every area: Practice Lab (short game, putting, driving skill tests), AI Coach, Game Plans, Training Plans (fitness, speed, stretching), Side Games (betting games with mates), and GPS Course Mapping.
